Seasoned Ground Beef..Paleo Style (Taco flavor)

I always used to buy the packets of mix and never think anything of it. Until I realized thats pretty expensive for what you are buying, AND ANNNND it had wheat and sugar in it. So I set out to create my own home blend of seasonings that gets me the same flavor (I think its better!) and is good for me. So after a few go rounds I have narrowed it down to the following. Let me know what you think of it!

RECIPE:

 Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs of ground beef
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of chili powder (more or less to taste)
  • 1/2 TBS of sea salt
  • 1/8 cup of granulated garlic
  • 2 TSP of cumin

Equipment needed:
  • Saute pan
  • 1 cup measuring cup
  • 1/8 cup measuring cup
  • 1/2 Tablespoon measuring spoon
  • 1 Teaspoon measuring spoon
  • Spatula
  • colander/strainer
  • Stove

Step 1:

In a non stick saute pan on med/high heat crumble ground beef to form an even layer around pan. You will hear it start to sizzle as you crumble the meat up. I use a spatula to flip the meat and stir it around so it all browns evenly. I also use it to chop up the crumbled ground beef in to smaller pieces
so there are no large chunks. (This usually takes 5-6 minutes total)

Step 2:

Once burger is thoroughly browned, transfer the pan over to your sink, and strain the grease out of the meat. Here is the hey though, you don't want to strain it overly long, because you can lose all the fats that are in the meat, and you want to
have some. For a time reference here is how I do it: Transfer all beef in to colander, shake once to get a little more oil out, and transfer beef back to pan.

Step 3:

Transfer the beef back in the pan, add water, and all spices. Stir so that it is all evenly distributed. You should have a deep reddish color throughout the pan. Allow beef to simmer in the water/spices to further cook, and to absorb all the flavors. Cooking time in this step can vary, but is generally done in 10-15 minutes on a medium heat. What you want to do is evaporate off all the water so that the spices are coating your beef. When the water is gone, you will hear the beef start to sizzle again like you are frying it. Turn off the heat and enjoy!

Tell me how you like the ground beef recipe! I find it less salty, and it has a lot better taste than the packaged stuff. Plus it is very easy to make. I cook it in 3-6lb batches and refrigerate it for meals throughout the week. It has a decent fat content which helps it reheat very nicely!
